How To Plant Seeds In Hydroponics

Planting seeds correctly is one of the most critical steps in ensuring successful germination, healthy growth, and optimal yield in your Jasper Grow. We’ll walk you through a tried and true method of germinating in your Jasper.

Step 1: Growing Medium & Baskets

Growing Medium Holds The Seeds

Your Jasper is supplied with rockwool cubes as the default growing medium. Rockwool offers the perfect growing conditions for your seeds: it is solid material that absorbs water easily and stays wet. It is also non-organic material meaning it does not encourage bacteria growth.

Baskets Holds The Growing Medium

Our reusable food safe plastic baskets hold the growing medium in place, allowing them to absorb water while supporting your plants

Start by pushing 1 growing medium all the way into the plastic basket. Make sure the rockwool cube is inserted all the way to the bottom. This ensures the rockwool touches the water and stays moist.

Pro Tip! You may want to trim the rockwool cubes with scissors to make them round, helping keep them spacious in growth basket.

Step 2: Preparing The Medium

Next we need to make holes for your seeds to fit in. You can use the end of a spoon, or a similar diameter stick-like object, to carve a hole of approx. 10mm deep and wide. If your growing medium comes with holes pre-made, it might not be necessary to make holes into it.

Did You Know! Rockwool is not the only material used as a hydroponic growing medium. You can experiment with other materials available, like growing cubes made from coconut husk. If you are just starting with hydroponics though, we recommend you plant your first seeds in rockwool.

Step 3: Planting The Seeds

Insert 2-4 seeds into the hole on top of the growing medium.Seeds are correctly installed when they lie down at the bottom of the hole.

Step 4: Soak The Cubes!

Next submerge the baskets holding the growing medium with seeds fully into water. Some users soak the baskets overnight but the main thing is to make sure the growing medium and the seeds are fully wet.

Important!Seeds must be thoroughly soaked to activate them. Germination of some plant species will benefit soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours before inserting them in the growing medium.

Step 5: Insert The Baskets Into Grow Lids

Drop the baskets into the holes on the lids.

Step 6: Start Germination

Make sure the water pump is turned on and the water is flowing evenly accros the bottom channel.

Cover the top with a damp kitchen towel or cloth. The aim is to keep the rockwool cubes and seeds in dark and damp conditions during the germination.

Congratulations!

You have now planted your first seeds and embarked on 6 week journey to grow tasty, homegrown plants.
